The TLC Campaign

Helping Everyone Tow Safely

The NTTA is a founding member of the UK Towing Safety Alliance, a national initiative dedicated to reducing towing-related incidents on UK roads. The Alliance brings together leading organisations across safety, leisure, agriculture and transport, working collaboratively to promote better towing practices for all road users.

This includes respected partners such as TyreSafe, the British Horse Society, Project EDWARD, National Highways, Driving for Better Business and the Camping and Caravanning Club. It also includes key voices from the leisure sector, such as the Caravan and Motorhome Club and The Pony Club, alongside industry and risk management organisations.

What is TLC

TLC stands for the three key safety checks every driver should carry out before towing:

Tyres – Ensure your tyres are inflated correctly, have legal tread depth and show no signs of damage or ageing
Load – Make sure the load is properly distributed, within legal limits and fully secured
Connectivity – Confirm that all lights, brakes, safety cables and couplings are connected and functioning properly

These simple steps can prevent the majority of breakdowns and accidents involving trailers, caravans and horseboxes.

Why This Campaign Matters

Towing-related incidents are rising across UK roads. National Highways data shows:

  • 16,705 incidents involving towed vehicles were recorded between 2022 and 2024

  • Incidents increased by 16 percent over this period

  • Trailers were involved in 45.2 percent of cases, caravans in 32.3 percent and horseboxes in 21.9 percent

  • 79.3 percent of these were breakdowns

  • In 2024, there were 1,544 tyre-related breakdowns, a 6.8 percent increase on 2022

  • Tyre breakdowns rose by 9 percent for trailers and 29 percent for horseboxes

Whether you tow a caravan, horsebox, trailer or equipment for work, or support customers who do, the TLC campaign offers practical guidance that helps everyone tow more safely.
